First of all, who was Nancy Reagan?

Nancy Reagan was the wife of President Ronald Reagan. She recently died on March 6, 2016. She was the first lady of the United States from 1981 to 1989 and helped her husband lead the “Just Say No” anti-drug campaign that was part of the larger War on Drugs of the Reagan administration.

Now, who is Fetty Wap?

Fetty Wap is a hip-hop artist who found recent widespread Internet fame for his viral hit “Trap Queen.”

What is a trap queen?

There are many definitions for what exactly is a trap queen.Urban Dictionarydefines a trap queen in the pejorative:

“A witty or street-smart female, usually with an urban flavor or appeal, who is loyal and resourceful . Baddest female superior to petty affairs and bitches. She is down to do what is needed for her friends, family and man. Capable of sass, class, and trash. She enjoys hip-hop, urban and trap culture.”

There is also this rougher definition that WearYourVoiceMag explains in more detail but essentially boils down to a woman who is a dealer or dates a dealer and helps cook, prepare and handle drugs being trafficked through the trap, “a place where drug dealers hang out and conduct their business,” as WearYourVoiceMag puts it.

So why does this petition want Fetty Wap to perform “Trap Queen” at Nancy Reagan’s funeral?

It comes down to people wanting to call out the Reagan’s War on Drugs, which many view as being counter productive, racist and simply a perpetuator of poverty.

“While her husband, Ronald Reagan, was linking up with Papi to flood the streets with narcotics, Nancy was on TV telling kids to ‘Say No To Drugs.’ Her infamous “anti-drug” phrase encouraged strict laws on drug possession that led to a school-to-prison pipeline we’re still dealing with now,” the Change.org petition explains. “Blacks and Latinos went to jail in droves for possessing drugs her husband gave them. It was an incredible sleight of hand that would make any wannabe Trap Queen hide in shame for her inability to be as diabolical as Nancy.”
