It is never a good sign when the media turns against an NFL head coach. But when the national analysts begin to chime in, it really is bad news.
Ben McAdoo is on the hot seat, a spot that goes up a few degrees and is now borderline scalding as the losses for his 1-7 New York Giants continue to mount. On Showtime’s ‘Inside the NFL’ this week, several of the analysts are beginning to bring the heat when it comes to McAdoo, including a name familiar to fans of the giants.
Former Giants quarterback Phil Simms pointed to his old team’s troubles and woes this past Sunday in a 51-17 loss to the Los Angeles Rams. It was the first bit of negativity from Simms directed towards his old team.
“There are things you look for; missed tackles. What are missed tackles? Why do they happen a lot? Well, really a lack of hustle. Blown assignments,” Simms said. “When you start blowing assignments as a football team that tells you something about the coach and what’s going on. And I look at special teams. That too shows me a sign, and the Giants had it this past week …We didn’t have guys that showed up late for meetings. If you did, it was unthinkable. You were in trouble.”
Simms, however, wasn’t the only former NFL quarterback to see that the Giants are headed in the wrong direction in more ways than one.
“There are guys on this New York Giants team that led this team to an 11-5 record last year,” former NFL quarterback and current NFL analyst Boomer Esiason said on the show. “This team was a playoff team last year and now all of a sudden they come back this year, they had all these high hopes and they got punched in the mouth Week 1 against the Dallas Cowboys and they have not responded from that.”
Later in the show, Esiason sounded doubts on McAdoo’s viability moving forward as a head coach of the Giants.
“In this case, I think the ship has sailed. There’s no way you have that many empty seats in that stadium,” Esiason said. “You have all sorts of problems. Unfortunately, Ben McAdoo — a good coach, a good person, I’m sure — but in this case, right now, it does not look good for him.”
