Celebrating Philly’s Byard Lancaster
Provided

Come and celebrate with the Philadelphia Jazz Project as they honor the late Philly musician Byard Lancaster with a special night of performances for “Byard Lancaster —Celebration of Life.”

Born in 1942,Lancaster was a Philadelphia man (and teacher) with an incredible talent for the alto saxophone. While he was a staple in the Philly music scene in the ’60s, he got to spread his talent around the world in places like the Caribbean and Africa, showcasing his musical gifts. His style was unconventional but he could perform soul and blues as well. Though he is most famous for his sax solos, he also studied other elements of music like composing, singing and piano. He passed away at the age of 70 to pancreatic cancer in 2012 but his memory lives on through music.

The tribute night is taking place on Thursday, July 28 at the Germantown branch ofSettlement Music School. The Eye2Eye Trio (Elliott Levin, Kim Pedro and Bert Harris) is performing with featured artist Monnette Sudler, along with other notable acts including Harold Smith on percussion, Jerome Hunter on bass, Larry Price on alto sax, Barbara Walker and Lisa Chavous on vocals, and Marianne Lancaster-Tyler on piano.

Tickets are $10 in advance and can be purchased online and are also available at the door but with an additional charge.
