Man charged in stray bullet shooting of teenager

The man who accidentally shot a teenager in the neck Sunday night, wounding him, has been charged with aggravated assault for the shooting, police said.

Duval Nelson, 38, of the 6100 block of Warnock Street, was allegedly involved in an argument when the shooting occurred around 8:20 p.m. on Sunday.

Witnesses saw Nelson arguing inside a rec center park at Morton and Duval streets with another man who punched him in the face, according to police.

Nelson allegedly drew a black handgun from his waistband and fired twice at the other male, who fled and was not hit. The bullets struck a 16-year-old boy in the park in the neck, who ran to his home and collapsed, police said.

“The victim does not appear to be involved in the dispute,” police said.

The victim was transported to Einstein Medical Center, located a block away, and was listed in critical condition.

Nelson reportedly left the scene in his vehicle, drove to a 35th District police station and turned himself in.
