More than 200 people with ties to Massachusetts died in the 9/11 attacks that shook the nation and changed lives forever.

On Wednesday, the 12th anniversary of the attacks, local leaders, family members of the victims, police and firemen and ordinary citizens stopped to remember those who lost their lives.

Early Wednesday morning a remembrance ceremony and wreath laying was held at the 9/11 Contemplative Garden in the Public Garden. That was followed by a flag lowering ceremony at the State House, where the names of the more than 200 people with ties to Massachusetts who died on 9/11 were read.

“Today we honor those lives we lost 12 years ago, the families who lost loved ones, and those who give their lives to protect us every day,” said Gov. Deval Patrick in a statement.

Also to mark the anniversary and in remembrance of the attacks, a blood drive was being hosted at Fenway Park and volunteers were assembling care packages on the Greenway to send to soldiers overseas and distribute to homeless veterans.

Thousands of people died when terrorists hijacked planes and flew them into the World Trade Center towers in New York City and the Pentagon in Washington, D.C. Another plane later crashed in a Pennsylvania field after passengers tried to retake it. Two of the four planes departed from Logan Airport.
