It’s out with the old and splintered and in with the new and stable for the 2010 municipal election.
The City of Calgary replaced thousands of 50-year-old wooden and splintered voting stations with more compact and sturdy plastic ones, according to returning officer Barb Clifford.
“People were getting splinters and we even had two stations collapse. The plastic ones will last forever,” Clifford said.
And for the first time, the new voting stations are wheelchair and disability-accessible, she added.
Clifford said the 1,700 new voting booths cost the city just over $100,000 — the same or cheaper than it would have cost to replace or repair the wooden ones. “We knew we had to do something and this was the best option,” Clifford said.
