Playing the Field: Bidding on Tebow, NHL brawling

It cost the Jets $2.53 million to two years with Tim Tebow. For one Florida couple, it cost them $100,000 to spend one day with the quarterback/Christ-like figure.

Tebow earned the bid at his annual charity golf tournament and auction yesterday at TPC Sawgrass. The money goes to the Tim Tebow Foundation. And while that’s the most boring charity name ever, unlike the Human Fund (“Money for people!”), this charity actually exists.

The couple, who asked to remain anonymous, will do the most boring thing ever — bring Tebow to their hometown and have him meet with underprivileged children. In other words, they gave a hundred G’s to a charity … in order to get Tebow to perform more charity. That’s honorable and all, but you can bet I’d have taken Tebow to every strip club in Vegas just to watch him squirm.

It did get me thinking though. What athlete would I pay $100,000 to hang out with for a day?

5.) Brian Wilson — The Giants’ closer is certifiably insane. If you want to have an exciting day, you’re probably not going to find anyone better in sports. And besides, he gets all the free Taco Bell he wants, right?

4.) Derek Jeter — I know, I know, you probably hate him. But if you’re in New York City can you think of anyone better to hang out with? He’ll get you into any club and when he disappears with Blake Lively, it leaves just you and Leighton Meester together. Right? That’s how this celebrity dating thing works, I assume. Besides, better to avoid clubbing with any Giants (see: Plaxico Burress, Victor Cruz).

3.) Alex Ovechkin — Off the map, I know. But have you seen any off-ice interviews with him? Now granted he does seem to be a little reckless, but definitely fun. Check it out:

2.) Mikhail Prokhorov — OK, maybe the Net’s owner is not technically an athlete, but he is excellent at jet ski tricks. He’s also a total playboy. He owns a gigantic, $45 million yacht of which, he told CBS’s “60 Minutes,” he doesn’t know where it is. He doesn’t know where is $45 million yacht is! Then again, did I mention he is worth $18 billion? Yeah, he’s worth hanging out with.

1.) Kate Upton — She’s an athlete, right? She appeared on the cover of Sports Illustrated. In my eyes, that makes you an athlete. Can we get a ruling on this? In the meantime, let’s watch her Dougie at an NBA game.

Two pucks and a cheap shot

If you missed Saturday night’s Game 2 of the Rangers-Senators series you missed a really good game. But you also missed a whole mess of issues.

First, right at the puck drop, New York’s Brian Boyle was targeted by Ottawa’s Matt Carkner for a couple shots Boyle delivered to Erik Karlsson in Game 1. Carkner is a straight up enforcer, which makes sense because he was probably teased a lot about his name as a kid. Boyle, on the other hand, can actually play hockey. Check the footage below, but Carkner went UFC on Boyle, going ground and pound after throwing him to the ice.

Also, stick around til the end to see Brandon Dubinsky, who came to the assistance of his teammate Boyle, get booted from the game and take out his frustration on a Gatorade cooler. Yankees great Paul O’Neill would be proud.

And as an added bonus, this is what happens when you have two pucks on the ice at the same time. It doesn’t work surprisingly.
