Playing the Field: Madden 2013 makes a fool out of Giants player, ESPN3 makes a fool of us all

Patriots quarterback Tom Brady often talks about how he still has the mindset that he had in 2000, when he had to scrape and claw just to land on an NFL roster. This is what drives him.

Of course, if you’re any NFL player, you need something to fuel you mentally, year-after-year-after-year if you want to continue to make the big dollars. You can never, EVER feel as if you’ve “made it.”

So potential superstars, beware of this:

In the minds of most players, there is only one thing that can make you feel as if you’ve truly “made it” in the NFL – an overall rating of “90” or above on Madden.

But there is another end of the spectrum. What if you suck so bad in the eyes of Big John himself that he slaps you with the dreaded “no photo available,” black silhouette?

Or, in the case of New York Giants defensive tackle Marcus Thomas, what if the picture of you on the game isn’t really you?

In Madden ’13, which was released earlier this week, the picture of the Giants’ Marcus Thomas is a Marcus Thomas. It’s just the wrong one.

The video game used a picture of Marcus Thomas, a running back that has been out of the league for three years. Even in retirement, the skill players get all the love.

What’s even more sad for the NYG Thomas is that he was the only one who noticed the error. He, of course, tweeted about it.

ESPN hates us

If you’re a fan of a certain college basketball team or a rooter of a mid-to-low-level college football squad, you know the drill by now.

You have to still work tremendously hard each and nearly every Saturday to watch your team.

Whether it’s finding a sports bar within a 20 mile radius to your home that actually carries the game or ponying up the cash to get a mediocre sports package that carries regional networks like SNY, CSNCH, FCSP, BTN, MASN or (gasp) ESPNU – you know you’re in for a struggle.

Thankfully, ESPN made it easier on all of us the past few years with its ESPN3 service. Instead of having to pay for three-to-12 bloody Marys at that sports bar every weekend, you could sit at home and watch these near-irrelevant games on your laptop. Perfect, right?

Guess not. The Worldwide Leader giveth, and now, taketh away. Just in time to confuse everyone on this first weekend of football.

ESPN3 will now be carrying a lot of cricket matches (seriously), but not much football or hoops.

WatchESPN is their new baby – but it is only available in nearly half the amount of homes across the country. If you’re “lucky enough” to have access to it, it will show up on your cable bill with a nice fee.
