Police and Fire Games take over Lower Mainland

A massive week-and-a-half sporting event featuring 10,000 athletes from around the world is underway across the Lower Mainland.

The 2009 Police and Fire Games began in the Lower Mainland on Friday, with events spread from the University of B.C. to Abbotsford.

“It’s amazing how good some of the athletes are,” said Rod Griffith, a Calgary firefighter who is competing in his fifth Police and Fire Games in ice hockey, high jump and hurdles.

“There are Olympic-class athletes doing these events. There are too many events to take them all in, but it’s good competition and good camaraderie.”

The Police and Fire Games, which run until Sunday, feature more than 60 events at more than 40 venues. Visit 2009wpfg.ca for times and locations.
