Police arrest man allegedly carrying shotgun down Halifax street

A 21-year-old man is facing a slew of weapons charges after allegedly being spotted walking down a west-end Halifax street carrying a shotgun under a “long black trench coat,” police say.

“We received a call of an individual believed to be in possession of a long-barrelled gun,” Halifax Regional Police spokesman Const. Brian Palmeter said yesterday afternoon. “Our officers responded (and) located the individual.”

Officers arrested the man on Chebucto Road as he approached the rotary just after 9 a.m., after finding “a shotgun underneath his clothing,” Palmeter said.

He added the man does live in Spryfield, but is originally from another province and isn’t believed to be connected to ongoing criminal activities in that part of the municipality.

“He’s not part of that whole silliness going out there – no indication that he is, anyway,” Palmeter said, adding “He’s not known to us.”

Palmeter said the man was still in custody yesterday afternoon. The weapon wasn’t loaded, police say.
