Police Commissioner: Cops in rape trial to lose their badges

Police officers Franklin Mata and Kenneth Moreno have been found not guilty on rape charges, but don’t expect to see them back patrolling the streets of New York.

NYPD Commissioner Ray Kelly just announced today that, effective immediately, the two officers will be terminated from the Police Department.

“The guilty verdicts reached today involved violations of the officers’ oaths of office and as a result warrant immediate termination from the Police Department, and we will pursue that today,” said Kelly in a tersely worded statement.

Mata and Moreno were cleared on rape charges, but found guilty of official misconduct. They admitted to making up a fake 911 call to get back to the woman’s apartment who later said Moreno raped her, and Moreno admitted to kissing and snuggling with her.

They could face up to a year in jail for the official misconduct conviction.
