Police are still determining what charges a 54-year-old woman could face following a fatal collision late Monday afternoon in Cole Harbour that is suspected of involving alcohol.
“It’s definitely part of our investigation,” RCMP spokesman Cpl. Joe Taplin said yesterday of whether alcohol played a role in the horrific crash.
The multi-car pile-up took place just before 5:40 p.m. at the intersection of Cole Harbour Road and Forest Hills Parkway and it involved the same Chevrolet Alero that police say was involved in a hit-and-run crash in front of 945 Cole Harbour Road moments earlier.
Police say in the first collision a woman pulled out of the parking lot and struck a Chevrolet Grand Am that was headed westbound. Three women and one infant girl travelling in the Grand Am were transported to hospital with what are believed to be non-life threatening injuries.
Police say the suspect fled the scene and started travelling eastbound on Cole Harbour Road when she allegedly struck two vehicles waiting at the red light – including a Toyota Camry.
The collision pushed both vehicles into the intersection and into a Chevrolet Malibu, which was turning left from Forest Hills Parkway onto Cole Harbour Road.
A 57-year-old Cole Harbour man who was driving the Camry was pronounced dead at the scene. Three other people were taken to hospital, including the woman behind the wheel of the Alero, who is still listed in serious condition.
Police are continuing their investigation into the cause of the crash, interviewing witnesses who saw either crash and were also talking to people who may have seen the suspect’s car travelling eastbound on Cole Harbour Road.
