Police issue warning after drug raid at home

Police are reminding bar patrons in the Halifax area to keep a close eye on their drinks after a large quantity of a popular date-rape drug was seized in Upper Sackville yesterday.

Halifax RCMP spokesman Cpl. Joe Taplin said officers discovered 44 vials of GHB (gamma hydroxy butyrate) at a home on Lylewood Drive.

“It’s been a while since we heard about (GHB), but it looks like it’s back out there,” said Taplin. “People should be very aware when they’re out, and be careful where they put their drinks.”

GHB is colourless, odourless, and virtually tasteless — making it an ideal weapon for anyone wanting to spike a beverage, said Taplin. The effects of the drug vary, but can include dizziness, slurred speech, desire to sleep and loss of consciousness.

According to Taplin, officers also seized about 10 grams of cocaine, 100 grams of marijuana, small amounts of ecstasy, hydromorphone, scales, drug paraphernalia and an undisclosed amount of cash in yesterday’s raid.

Jesse Chase, 22, faces charges of possession of cocaine, GHB, ecstasy, marijuana and hashish for the purpose of trafficking. Jason Chase, 20, has been charged with possession of marijuana for the purpose of trafficking.
