Police link drug busts to gang activity

Police have charged five men after seizing nearly $200,000 worth of cocaine in two separate incidents.

The first bust came last Wednesday when police found 175 grams of crack cocaine worth $17,500 and a small amount of marijuana in a southwest Calgary home. Police say $2,195 in cash and a personalized licence plate with the word

“Gangsta” were also seized from the home located at the 5000 block of 21 St. S.W., of 22-year-old Dante Whittaker, a man police call a well-known gang member.

“Dante is a known gang member, who has been charged before,” said Martin Schiavetta, acting Staff Sgt. of the organized crime operations centre.

Also charged in connection with this case were Jewit Cashlea Anthony, 19, with one count each of possession of cocaine for the purpose of trafficking, possession of marijuana for the purpose of trafficking and proceeds of crime; and

Samiya Shal Abdi, 18, charged with one count each of possession of cocaine for the purpose of trafficking and possession of marijuana for the purpose of trafficking.

On Friday police raided a home in the 8300 block of Saddleridge Dr. N.E. where they found 1,043 grams of powder cocaine worth $104,290 and 762 grams of rock cocaine worth $76,200, as well as $40,000 in cash.

Benjamin Ho, 24, and Andy Ngoc Tran, 26, face one count each of possession for the purpose of trafficking and possession of property obtained by criminal activity.

  • Schiavetta said Calgary police are currently monitoring 12 active street gangs, seven of which he said are committing violent crimes on a regular basis.
