Police advise people to always be aware of their surroundings, and to try to stay in well-lit or heavily populated areas. They advise people not to be distracted by smartphones or headphones and to let a trusted person know where you are going. They also advise people to carry themselves with confidence and to avoid looking like a victim, meaning that they should be assertive and not allow anyone to violate their personal space.

They implore people to never assume that an attack can’t happen. They also suggest that people bet on themselves when confronted by an unarmed attacker by scaring the attacker or even fighting them off if the individual is confident in their ability to take their attacker on.
