A Revere police officer was hospitalized Thursday due to injuries sustained when he crashed into a pole during an early morning chase.

The chase was headed into Chelsea from nearby Revere, Chelsea Police Chief Brian Kyes told WCVB, when the officer’s cruiser, a Ford Explorer, crashed along Marginal Street into a pole.

Franchesco Ortiz, who was working nearby and helped to pull the officer from the wrecked vehicle, told CBS, “He was just in pain, so much pain. He couldn’t even talk. He was just like, ‘Help me.’”

The chase began shortly before 8 a.m. when the officer was dispatched due to a reported suspicious party in a motor vehicle on Park Avenue in Revere, WCVB reported.

That call turned into the high-speed chase that injured the officer and allowed the suspect to successfully flee, CBS stated. He has not been caught.

The officer, whose name has not been released, was taken to Massachusetts General Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, according to WCVB.
