Police officer slashed while breaking up fight in Brooklyn

An NYPD officer was slashed in the face and neck over the weekend as she attempted to break up a fight in Brooklyn, according to published reports.

Plainclothes officers — assigned to Patrol Borough Brooklyn North’s anti-crime team — responded to a large fight near Saratoga Avenue and Marion Street after 1 a.m. on Sunday, according to ABC.

While the cops attempted to break up the fight, Police Officer Denisha Pierre was cut on the left side of her face from her cheek to neck, the New York Daily News reported.

The 14-year NYPD veteran was taken to New York Methodist Hospital and was treated for superficial cuts, which did not require stitches, the Daily News reported.

Xiomara Velez, 27, was arrested and charged with assaulting a police officer, menacing, resisting arrested and criminal possession of a weapon, ABC said.

The box cutter used during the incident was recovered at the scene.

This slashing joined five others which occurred over the weekend and joins a large increase in slashings in the city.

According to the Daily News, through Sunday, slashings –involving razors, knives and other cutting instruments — were up 21 percent with 567 incidents this year so far — compared to 470 during the same time last year.
