Police are looking for clues as to how a 61-year-old Calgary grandmother, who was reported missing on Saturday, was found near death under her basement stairs later that night.
The woman later passed away in hospital.
Police initially searched the neighbourhood for Guifen Liu when she was reported missing from her home in the 300 block of Varsity Estates Grove NW on Saturday afternoon by a family member.
Duty Insp. Keith Cain said a large-scale search was underway when the woman was found underneath the stairs of her home by a family member.
“She was found in medical distress and was transferred to hospital where she died from her injuries,” Larson said.
Homicide investigators were on scene yesterday but police are remaining tight-lipped until autopsy results are completed this week.
“We don’t really have a lot of information at this point,” Cain said, but he added the death is being investigated as suspicious.
Neighbours in this northwest community were surprised by the news.
“This is a quiet neighbourhood. I don’t know who would do something like that,” one neighbour said.
