Police remind riders, drivers to share the road

As the summer tires come out, so do the motorcyclists, warn Calgary police.

Police are reminding both riders and drivers to watch out for each other and to share the road this season.

“We’re encouraging motorcyclists to please be careful out there,” said Jim Lebedeff, senior constable, traffic education unit. For the past two years, June has been the month with the highest motorcycle collision record.

Excessive speed and slow reaction times are the most common cause for accidents, said Lebedeff, although stupidity also plays a part.

“Don’t be foolish,” he said. “I’ve seen people do wheelies in the middle of Deerfoot Trail.”

Riders are encouraged to take a safe motorcycling course before heading out for the first time, said Lebedeff.
