Police to investigate Spryfield apartment fire

The fire that trapped several people on the third floor of a Spryfield apartment building Wednesday has been deemed suspicious.

Fire investigators turned the case over to police Thursday.

A fire broke out on the third floor of the apartment building at 538 Herring Cove Rd. on Wednesday at 3:30 p.m. Firefighters used ladders to rescue five people who couldn’t use the hallways because of intense smoke and flames.

Several people were taken to the hospital with minor injuries and smoke inhalation.

“I can’t say what it was that led investigators to believe it was (suspicious) because that’s sensitive information to the investigation,” said Const. Jeff Carr with the Halifax Regional Police.

There are no arrests yet, and police are beginning to interview witnesses, he added.
