Poor economy, more value

If the kickoff was any indication, the 2009 Calgary Stampede really will be the best outdoor show in history as over 100 new additions were announced at the star-studded launch yesterday.

The Calgary Stampede wanted to add more value to the customer experience by making it bigger and better this year during the tough economic times, board president and CEO Dr. David Chalack said.

“What it really comes down to is the experience and most importantly we want everyone to really enjoy themselves,” Chalack said. “It really is going to be the best year ever, absolutely.”

Chalack said while the world is in a different economic state than last year, the Stampede will offer more of everything for people to come out and kick up their heels for some relief.

“The world is coming to us and we’re ready to let the party begin,” he added.

Highlights of the new rodeo additions include a new chuck wagon format, bigger prize money topping over $2 million, more world champions competing and an exceptional finale weekend, Chalack added.

Derby Les McIntyre, a former rider and new voice of the GMC Rangeland, said there are many more additions visitors will be able to enjoy, including more restrooms, bicycle parking spaces, wider walkways and new exhibitions.

“Talk about exciting. For me this is a dream come true,” he added.
