PorchFest returns to Somerville on Saturday

Whatever your musical persuasion is, you’ll find it at Porchfest in Somerville this weekend.

“I think the depth and breadth of PorchFest is pretty amazing. You can get rock and you can get country, you can get classical, you can get a Tibetan folk band,” said Heather Balchunas, office manager for the Somerville Arts Council. “There is really, truly something for everybody.”

Once again, the city is inviting its eclectic mix of performers to take the stage – er, porch – for its massive outdoor music festival. The fun starts Saturday at 12 p.m. and runs through 6 p.m.

Overwhelmed by the dozens and dozens of options? PorchFest’s website has an interactive map and a tool that lets you filter the performances down to the ones most appealing to you.

“You can really kind of customize your tour,” Balchunas said.

Or, you can just wander around and listen for what catches your attention at the endless musical buffet of jam sessions, HONK! veterans and that guy who plays the theremin.

The festival over the past few years has become among the most popular events of the year in Somerville, and others in Massachusetts have followed the ‘Ville’s lead.

Jamaica Plain (Saturday, July 9) now has a PorchFest of its own.

New additions this year are Brookline (Saturday, June 4) and Arlington (Saturday, June 11) and

“It’s really nice that there’s been kind of this cross-pollination within the music community and getting people involved in a really kind of special way,” Balchunas said.
