Possible trash strike bad news for buildings

Businesses, condo owners and apartment dwellers in Ottawa could be caught in the middle of a garbage strike.

Earlier this week, 50 waste haulage personnel and 15 landfill operators employed by Waste Management Canada Inc. voted in favour of a strike if a deal could not be reached in the next two weeks.

According to Dan Sauve, president of CUPE 1338, which represents the employees, the main point of contention is a 25 per cent clawback in employee benefits.

“Some of our senior members have been in this for 40 years … it’s paramount that we have decent benefits,” he said.

Sauve said Waste Management also offered a wage structure that called for a wage freeze in the first year.

Waste Management spokesperson Wes Muir said they would not discuss the terms being negotiated, but said they hope to continue to negotiate towards a successful settlement before the strike deadline.tim wieclawski
