Potential PCB leak forces downtown evacuation

A possible noon-hour hazardous chemical leak forced 10 people off the Len Werry Building’s fifth floor yesterday.

Just before lunch, the Calgary Fire Department responded to an alarm at the corner of 1 St. SW and 7 Ave., indicating a possible PCB leak on the building’s fifth floor, forcing an evacuation, an alarm that went building-wide moments after firefighter’s arrived on the scene.

Calgary Hazmat crews conducted thorough tests on the fifth floor and smelled a smoky-type odour after entry, but were unable to ascertain exactly what set off the alarm, said Calgary Fire’s Jeff Budai, adding it was contained to one specific room on the fifth floor.

“It was self-contained, had its own ventilation system and so as far as a hazard, we knew it was fairly well taken care of,” he said. “It’s always better to err on the side of caution.”
