Tonight, “Potted Potter” celebrates the birthday of “Harry Potter” series author J.K. Rowling. Rowling and her protagonist Harry share the same birthday, which is July 31. However, to honor the time difference between the U.K. and U.S., “Potted Potter” is celebrating a little early on July 30 at the 7:30 p.m. show. That way, they say, they will be the first to wish the acclaimed author “happy birthday.” The special night includes a cake, magic wands and a sing-along following the performance. (But you can still buy tickets to the show on July 31, if you’re so inclined.)

The internationally popular children’s show stars Daniel Clarkson and Jefferson Turner, who take all seven of the “Harry Potter” books and boil them down to a compact 70 minutes. The trouble, however, is that Dan is akin to a “Potter” scholar, while Jeff has not actually read the books. It’s up to this pair of bumbling muggles to muddle through the basic storylines while engaging an audience of all ages — including an “impromptu” game of Quidditch that involves audience participation.

“Potted Potter: The Unauthorized Harry Experience – A Parody by Dan and Jeff” is playing off-Broadway at the Little Shubert Theater through Sept 1. Afterward, it will take off on a national tour. Check the schedule to learn where it’s headed next at www.pottedpotter.com.
