Premium bus service urged

A city report is urging councillors to get on board with a plan that could see premium bus service roll through seven blocks of Stony Plain Road as soon as this summer.

The premium bus service will offer a minimal number of stops that will be comparable to the LRT to speed up service, and it will offer a “higher-than-average” speed as well as improved service reliability, said the report.

“Premium bus service could act as a pre-curser to LRT in corridors identified for LRT expansion,” read the report.

The premium bus service will also require bus lanes and transit signal priorities at congested intersections for it to work, read the report.

And a plan to implement bus lanes eastbound from Jasper Place Transit Centre to 149 Street on Stony Plain Road could be implemented by this summer, said the report.

Plans to offer the premium bus service between West Edmonton and the South Campus LRT Station could be offered by September while extra bus lanes are being built during the construction along Fox Drive, said the report.

“By combining funding approved in road rehabilitation and upgrading programs with transit priority improvements, a more aggressive schedule for premium transit can be achieved,” said the report.

The city’s transportation committee will debate the plan on Tuesday.
