Impeachment mere months away: Prof. who predicted Trump election win

Trump impeachment

He predicted Donald Trump would win the presidency before anyone even took the idea seriously; now, the university professor says a Trump impeachment is coming within the next year.

Trump impeachment and midterm elections.

American University Professor Allan Lichtman said on Tuesday that a Trump impeachment is expected within mere months.

“The odds on a Trump impeachment or a Nixon-style resignation are now quite high,” he told the Daily Star. “It will depend on what other information emerges from the Mueller investigation.

“It would likely come by the spring of 2018, or whenever Republicans come to believe that Trump is jeopardizing their re-elections in 2018.”

While Trump insists he is not under investigation, “[Special council Robert] Mueller’s filing in federal court of just partial information from his plea deal with [former campaign staffer George] Papadopoulos, contains stunning new revelations,” Lichtman wrote for Time in a piece published on Thursday.

Lichtman predicted a Trump win in September 2016 but also said No. 45 would eventually be impeached.

“I’m going to make another prediction,” he said, the Independent reported at the time. “This one is not based on a system, it’s just my gut. They don’t want Trump as president because they can’t control him. He’s unpredictable. They’d love to have Pence — an absolutely down the line, conservative, controllable Republican.

“And I’m quite certain Trump will give someone grounds for impeachment, either by doing something that endangers national security or because it helps his pocketbook.”

Trump impeachment only months away, professor says.

“New indictments and perhaps other flipped witness are certain to follow in Mueller’s relentless investigation of the Trump-Russia connection and also allegations that the president obstructed justice,” Lichtman wrote in Time. “A Russian sword of Damocles is hanging over this American president by the slenderest of threads. When this sword falls even Republicans, as in the Nixon case, will likely be compelled to begin impeachment proceedings. Otherwise, Trump, whose approval ratings are already at historic lows, will take them down in the midterm elections of 2018.”
