Priest struck and wounded by stray bullet in Queens

A priest was wounded after being struck by a stray bullet in Queens early Sunday, according to police.

The incident happened around midnight near 134th Avenue and Rockaway Boulevard in South Ozone Park. He was on his way home from visiting friends and was waiting for a cab when he heard the gunfire and suddenly felt pain in his right arm, according to ABC7.

The priest was shot in the shoulder while walking by the area.

Father Damien Ekete, 49, a pastor at the Church of the Holy Spirit in Morris Heights in the Bronx, was taken to Jamaica Hospital and is listed in stable condition.

Police believe he was a bystander and not a target in the shooting. No arrests have been made.
