Projectile road debris kills driver

Police are urging commercial truck drivers to check their vehicles for a missing brake drum after a Calgary woman was killed when the object shot through her window on the Trans-Canada Highway.

The woman, 25, was driving alone in her Toyota SUV, heading west when a semi drove over the drum, sending it hurtling through her front windshield Monday night. The woman died in hospital yesterday.

Traffic unit Staff Sgt. Colin Foster said police believe the piece fell off of a commercial vehicle that may have been heading to B.C.

They are pleading with drivers to check their mechanics and come forward to police.

“The driver may not even know they are missing the brake drum,” Foster said, adding police “owe it to the family” to find out where it came from.

Foster said the incident happened so quickly that there was no way to avoid the brake drum.

“This is exceptionally rare. I’m convinced the young woman wouldn’t even have known. It happened so fast.”

He couldn’t say for sure whether the vehicle the drum originated from was “up to snuff.”

The driver of the semi that hit the debris stayed on scene and was co-operative.

Police are not releasing the name of the victim.
