Protesters demand mayor step down after South Carolina shooting

Protesters gathered at North Charleston City Hall in South Carolina on Wednesday after awhite police officer fatally shot a 50-year-old black man, Walter Scott, in the back as he ran away following a traffic stop. The graphic, unedited video of the now-terminated officer, Michael Slager, shooting Scott is here.

Protesters shouted, “No justice, no peace!” as Mayor Keith Summey and Police Chief Eddie Driggers spoke about actions the city will take in response to the shooting, reports CNN. Summey threatened to shut down the conference if the protesters continued to shout.

When reporters asked Driggers if CPR was performed on Scott, he responded, “I have watched the video and I was sickened by what I saw. And I have not watched it since, but … in the end of it, what I saw was (what I) believed to be a police officer removing the shirt of the individual and performing some type of life-saving (procedure), but I’m not sure what took place there,” according to CNN.

Summey told people at the conference that the city has ordered 251 body cameras so that every officer in North Charleston will be held accountable for his or her actions.

After the conference wrapped, protesters demanded that Summey step down, chanting, “The mayor’s got to go!”

Though Slager has been fired, he will continue to receive medical insurance until his 8-months-pregnant wife has their baby.Slager is charged with murder and could face the death penalty if convicted.
