Protesters prep for big turnout

With members of Parliament returning to work this week, pro-Tamil supporters are preparing for some of their largest crowds so far today and tomorrow.

“The war back home is not ending so people are getting more desperate for help,” said Tharsan Siva, a Tamil-Canadian uOttawa student. “We want Stephen Harper to realize this is not just one person’s cause.”

Tamil supporters have been demonstrating outside of Parliament Hill for nearly two weeks.

The group has been asking for the Canadian government to call for a ceasefire in the decades-long civil war in Sri Lanka.

For 10 days, a small group of protestors attempted a hunger strike, but that was abandoned on the weekend over health concerns and pleas from Tamil leaders and members of Parliament.

The group is now circulating a petition calling on the Canadian government to ask for a ceasefire in Sri Lanka. They hope to present the petition to MPs tomorrow.
