Province ignored SARS: Lawyer

The first nurse to die of SARS was served up as “expendable fodder” in the face of a “killer pathogen” that swept through Toronto hospitals while the provincial government assured the world the disease was conquered, the Ontario Court of Appeal was told yesterday.

Provincial health officials took a “hear no evil, see no evil, speak no evil” approach to SARS after the World Health Organization issued a travel advisory on April 23, 2003, warning tourists against visiting Toronto, argued lawyer Lisa Miron.

Miron represents the family of Nelia Laroza, one of five groups of plaintiffs who filed lawsuits against the Ontario government in the aftermath of the SARS crisis, which killed 44 people.
