Province offers cash reward for tips in hitchhiker cold case

The province is offering up to $150,000 for information to help solve the case of a murdered hitchhiker near Chester.

Steven Michael Hall of Seffernsville, Lunenburg Co., disappeared on Saturday, April 26, 1996. He was last seen hitchhiking on Highway 3 towards Chester after paying a bill at the Chester Basin Ultramar.

About seven months later, on November 23, 1996, Hall’s body was found in a wooded area on Hogg Lott Rd., about 13 kilometres north of the Chester area.

He was determined to have died from unnatural causes but no charges were ever laid.

The case is the most recent addition to Nova Scotia’s Rewards for Major Unsolved Crimes Program, which offers cash rewards for information.

Any tips can be reported to the Department of Justice toll-free at 1-888-710-9090. More information, and other cases, can be found at www.gov.ns.ca/just.
