Province to pay for 41 more cops

Calgary is 41 officers closer to “optimal levels,” a city alderman said after the province announced 100 officers would be added to the provincial ranks.

Ward 8 Ald. John Mar said he is happy with the announcement and that it’s part of the 400-officer commitment the city made to its citizens.

“This demonstrates that crime and the prevention is the No. 1 priority for … Calgary,” Mar said.
The 41 officers for Calgary and 35 for Edmonton make up the majority of the 100 to be added province-wide, said Premier Ed Stelmach.

“Times have changed since I made that promise. But one thing that hasn’t changed is Albertans’ desire to feel safe, to feel secure in their homes and in their communities,” Stelmach said during a press conference yesterday at the Alberta Legislature.
