Province to review chronic student absenteeism

Education Minister Judy Streatch revealed Tuesday the province will conduct a review to see why students are spending less time in the classroom.

“Chronic student absenteeism is a huge concern for teachers,” Nova Scotia Teachers Union president Alexis Allen said in a release.

The review will look at ways to improve conditions in schools, such as by fostering good behaviour, and will evaluate current legislation, the release said.

The committee will be chaired by former deputy minister Howard Windsor, who acted as the one-man Halifax regional school board for a couple of years, and will be made up of several public education stake holders. Public input will also be considered.

Streatch said she wants the review to be finished in time for the new school year this September.
