Province’s beaches need protection, group says

Nova Scotia’s beaches are in trouble and decision-makers must protect them, according to the Ecology Action Centre.

On Thursday the EAC will unveil a report entitled On the Front Lines: Strategies for Healthy Beaches in Nova Scotia.

It includes seven goals for the province and steps to help meet them, including updating the Beaches Act, hiring more specialists at the Department of Natural Resources, and creating a beach research and advisory network.

“Communities across the province are sounding the alarm about a variety of beach threats including accelerated erosion, unchecked coastal development, habitat degradation, climate change and the loss of public access,” said Ecology Action Centre coastal researcher Sadie Beaton in a release.
