Driving a racecar is challenging enough. But Charlie Kimball’s pre-race checklist is a little longer than the average driver’s.
The California driver suffers from Type 1 diabetes, so his race routine involves monitoring glucose levels in his body to go with the gas in his vehicle.
“If I’ve done my job right, I don’t have to worry about my diabetes,” Kimball said.
His car comes equipped with a monitor for his blood sugar, as well as a stash of orange juice if he needs a quick fix of glucose.
To this end, Kimball gives talks all over North America about the trail he has blazed in racing.
“I’ve had a lot of great responses,” said Kimball, who’s eyeing a podium finish in the Firestone Indy Lights series this weekend.
