RCMP issues warning after faker poses as Chilliwack Mountie

If you’ve been pulled over recently in Chilliwack, it may have been a good idea to have asked the cop for ID.

A 19-year-old man is facing charges after a man impersonated an officer and pulled over a Chilliwack woman on Tuesday night, the RCMP said.

Cpl. Lea-Anne Dunlop, said the impersonator’s car was equipped with a siren and flashing lights.

The fake cop asked the woman where she was headed to and if she had been drinking. The man was dressed in plain clothes and had no police equipment on him, which made the woman suspicious. She later phoned police who confirmed the man wasn’t a Mountie.

Dunlop said the RCMP doesn’t believe the man had any malicious intent but wouldn’t speculate on whether it was a prank. She believes there may be another man involved and said that this has happened before.

“Whenever somebody puts themselves in a position of authority, it is a public safety risk,” said Dunlop. Investigators are asking people to call police if they suspect they have been pulled over by a fake cop.
