RCMP seize firearms from home after theft

Halifax RCMP say they seized several firearms from an East Preston home yesterday, weapons they believe could be related to a robbery in the early morning hours of Tuesday in Lake Echo.

Police say a handful of firearms were stolen from a home on Linda Lane in Lake Echo in the overnight hours. They say either one or a group of individuals broke in through the garage by breaking a window, and then broke the lock of a gun locker and took five firearms.

Police say a four-wheel ATV was also stolen.

Police spokesperson Cpl. Joe Taplin said yesterday their investigation led them to getting a search warrant at a home on Upper Patridge River Road in East Preston.

Taplin said police — who were heavily armed — entered the residence at 2:30 p.m. and recovered two firearms, ammunition, a stolen ATV, five power saws and lawn equipment.

“The investigation will continue to see if those were the same possible firearms stolen from Linda Lane,” Taplin said.

Taplin added that a man on an ATV near the residence “left the area in a hurry and police couldn’t locate him” prior to their search.

He said the homeowner — an 85-year-old woman — isn’t involved, “but there are other people residing there with her.”

Taplin said the robbery could be the work of one person, “but we’d never rule out more.”
