Real Canadians show active side

You don’t have to reinvent yourself to live a healthier, more active life. You just have to find ways to move more!

As the national voice of physical activity and sport participation, Particip- ACTION is proud to celebrate the real-life stories of five Canadians who have added more movement into their lives.

As Phase 2 of our “Get Inspired. Get Moving” campaign, we have created five television ads featuring their personal stories to inspire all Canadians to follow in their footsteps.

The ads tell powerful, personal stories about individuals overcoming barriers to achieve a healthier, more active future for themselves and their families. They feature Alison Alleyne (Surrey, B.C.), Diane Lawes (Edmonton), Joania Burnett (Ottawa), Richard Marier (Laval, Que.), and Stephane Martel (Roverval, Que.).

To find these everyday heroes, we called on all Canadians to share how they are moving more so they could inspire others to do the same. In November 2008, we launched television commercials featuring Canadian icons Donovan Bailey, Farley Flex, Rick Hansen and Mary Walsh to encourage people to post stories about getting active on our online Wall of Inspiration.

We worked with the Canadian Fitness and Lifestyle Research Institute to understand the common hurdles people face in their busy lives and select stories about getting active that will resonate with people on a personal level.

Out of more than 1,000 submissions from across the country, we chose three English and two French people to be featured in separate 30-second commercials. We worked with our advertising agency to record the five stories in the individuals’ own voices and bring them to life through illustration and animation. The animation gives a whimsical feel to the campaign and highlights that physical activity can be meaningful and fun.

Our campaign shows that everyone is capable of being a hero in his or her own story — whether it’s through getting active with their kids, overcoming obstacles or simply looking at things in a new light.

Thank you to all the Canadians who shared their stories on our Wall of Inspiration.

We received stories from across the country and we hope to receive more —Phase 3 of the campaign will feature more selections, slated to air later this year.

This is truly a grassroots initiative to celebrate individuals who are living a healthier, more active lifestyle. Get inspired and get moving, Canada!
