Red-letter day in red-tape fight

Mayor Naheed Nenshi stood on the stairs of city hall yesterday to encourage hundreds of city employees to help cut through the red tape.

Nenshi said city employees should be tapped for their ideas on how to streamline business at city hall.

“We have to work at a number of levels simultaneously because changing the culture in such a large organization is not the easiest thing in the world,” he said.

“We have to create a grassroots movement among the people that work here.”

Community and neighbourhood services employee Leanne Squair said she
found Nenshi’s speech “uplifting and inspiring.”

“I’m happy to hear that he wants us to come to work everyday with the passion that we have and be inspired to be innovative and free-thinking.”

Fellow city employee Stephen Persaud, of traffic operations, said he feels freer to speak up now.

“I will surely speak out if something is going wrong,” he said.
