Red Sox in on some big names at trade deadline

The Red Sox might not make any major deals by Sunday’s trade deadline: The emergence (and re-emergence) of Josh Reddick and Tim Wakefield has plugged some of their biggest holes.

But they might. And if they do, it might be for a major name.

They’re in on Rockies ace Ubaldo Jimenez, tweeted Joel Sherman of the New York Post. But the asking price there is huge: “three sure-thing young players, including one pitcher who goes into their rotation immediately,” according to ESPN’s Buster Olney. Don’t hold your breath there.

Sports Illustrated’s Jon Heyman reported that the Mets are scouting Boston’s farm system for a possible Carlos Beltran deal. But they’re doing the same thing with Texas — and a trade to the Giants or Braves seems more likely, anyway. Beltran reportedly prefers the National League.

Heyman also has the Sox in the race for Seattle lefty Erik Bedard. The oft-injured Bedard is scheduled to come off the DL for a Friday start against Tampa Bay.
