Red Sox prospect watch: Jason Groome to make debut, Michael Kopech is a strikeout machine

The Red Sox are moving full steam ahead, doing everything they can to make a World Series run in 2016.

As such, a few trades have shuffled their minor league system and have given Boston a new list of top prospects. Here’s a look at how the top five have fared recently for their respective affiliates:

Yoan Moncada (Double-A, Portland)

The 21-year-oldCuban is playing consistent baseball for the Sea Dogs, with a batting average near .300 and a respectable 13 homers and 57 RBI. In all, 50 of the second baseman’s 111 hits went for extra bases. He also makes the opposition pay when he gets on base. He has 44 stolen bases and a .402 on base percentage thanks to 62 walks.

Rafael Devers (Single-A, Salem)

Devers is 19, and has had ups and downs at the plate this season but seems to be settled down after playing for most of the summer. He’s hit .308 over his last 10 games to life his season average to .285. He has a .325 average overall for the month of August.

Jason Groome (Rookie, Gulf Coast)

He hasn’t thrown a pitch yet, but the Red Sox first rounder from the 2016 draft will make his professional baseball debut Monday afternoon for the Gulf Coast Red Sox. He’s big (6-foot-5, 225 pounds) and has a fastball already in the mid-90s, and is one of the Red Sox’ top five prospects before ever appearing in a game.

Michael Kopech(Single-A, Salem)

The Sox drafted Kopech three years ago and he’s burst onto the scene over the last 10 starts he’s made in the lower levels of the minors. In that span, he’s gone 3-1 with a microscopic 1.29 ERA. And here’s the insane part — he has 75 strikeouts in 48.2 innings. If he can keep this up, watch out.

Sam Travis (Triple-A, Pawtucket)

The 22-year-old first basemanwas expected to be the future of the position for the organization, but injury woes have at least paused those hopes. He’s out for the year with a torn ACL, and will try and fight his way back in 2017.
