Cincinnati Reds second baseman Scooter Gennett, sidelined all season after suffering a severe groin strain near the end of spring training, has been activated ahead of the team’s Friday night game against the Chicago Cubs.

Gennett, who had four rehab appearances at Class-A Daytona and three at Class-AAA Louisville, will play second base and bat sixth. He went 4-for-26 at the plate during his rehab.

Catcher Tucker Barnhart was placed on the 10-day injured list with a right oblique strain in a corresponding move, which is retroactive to Sunday.

Gennett, 29, has 50 home runs and 189 RBIs in the past two seasons for the Reds, who acquired him off waivers from the Milwaukee Brewers in March 2017. He had a breakout season in 2017 and was selected to his first All-Star Game in 2018.

Gennett has a career batting average of .289 with 85 home runs in six seasons, four in Milwaukee.

He is on a one-year contract worth $9,775,000.
