Three soldiers from the King’s Own Calgary Regiment were honoured as part of the celebrations for the regiment’s 100 years of service yesterday afternoon.
The Sacrifice Medal, presented to members of Canadian Forces wounded or killed in action, was received by the family of Cpl. Nathan Hornburg.
Cpl. Mark Fuchko and Master Cpl. Sean Markwell, both wounded in Afghanistan, were also honoured.
The medal presentation concluded the day’s events, which included military demonstrations and the march of over 50 members of the regiment from the Mewata Armoury to St. Stephan’s Church and back.
The celebrations also honoured the Calgary Highlanders and the 14th Service Battalion, along with marking St. George’s Day.
Big Rock Breweries has donated specially commemorated bottles of beer featuring art work of the armoury on the label to honour the soldiers. The bottles are not available to the public; however, they are expected to become a collector’s item.
“For the guys, it’s a big deal,” said Capt. Malcolm Day. “It’s kind of like a birthday present.”
The three units will jointly march for the public on May 29 on the Currie Barracks Parade Square to conclude the centennial celebration.
This will be the last public parade on the square before it is renovated.
