Remembering our freedoms

As 20-year-old Michael Keelie shopped on 17th Avenue yesterday he threw spare change into one of the many Poppy Fund containers now available in the city.

He doesn’t know where the money goes specifically but he knows the importance of donating it to those who sacrificed their lives for our freedoms.

“I know that they deserve this and it’s the least we can do as Canadians and in Calgary. I always make sure to throw some change in when I can and throw a poppy on my coat,” he said, adding he usually buys a few throughout the month.

The Royal Canadian Legion 264 president Cliff Pilkey said the Poppy Fund campaign raised $1.8 million last year and he hopes Calgarians can better that amount this year.

“It’s very important to remember those who sacrificed their lives while serving but it’s also important for the survivors who fought for our freedoms,” Pilkey said.

Pilkey said funds raised help not only veterans but also city seniors and can go towards medical supplies like wheelchairs and canes to food and helping widows with rent.
