Free agency officially begins in the NFL Tuesday and it is still unknown as to how big of a player the Patriots will be. Early Tuesday, it appeared that the Pats were ready to lock up their most prized incumbent free agent, cornerback Aqib Talib. NBC Washington reporter Dianna Russini tweeted late Monday that Talib is close to re-signing with New England after the Redskins had declared great interest this past weekend.

In other Patriots free agency news, New England cut four relatively unknowns Monday in receiver T.J. Moe, defensive lineman Cory Grissom, running back Sam McGuffie and linebacker Taylor Reed. It was reported by NFL Network Monday, however, that New England will re-sign tight end Michael Hoomanawanui to a two-year deal.
In moves that could possibly effect the Patriots’ plans: the Jets released wide receiver Santonio Holmes, the Steelers are expected to cut linebacker LaMarr Woodley and the 49ers are expected to release cornerback Carlos Rogers.

Decisions by the Patriots will likely be made soon on their own free agents – Talib and receiver Julian Edelman. There are also rumblings about restructuring defensive tackle Vince Wilfork’s contract.
