Report: Celtics to land Courtney Lee in trade

Danny Ainge did it again.

No, it’s not anywhere close to the same level as when he got Kevin Garnett to agree to a trade to Boston, but Ainge shocked much of the NBA world Thursday, reportedly getting the Houston Rockets to agree to a sign-and-trade that lands Courtney Lee in Boston.

Yahoo! Sports was first to report that the C’s would send JaJuan Johnson to Houston for Lee, before the Boston Herald added that E’Twaun Moore, Sean Williams, and a 2013 second round pick would also be included in the deal.

Metro Boston saw Ainge talking with Rockets GM Daryl Morey and Rockets coach (and former teammate) Kevin McHale on separate occasions during summer league play this week in Las Vegas.

So what does this mean for the Celtics? They’re extremely deep in the backcourt.

Rajon Rondo. Avery Bradley. Jason Terry. Courtney Lee. Is there a four-man guard rotation in the league better than that one? Bradley may not be ready to start the regular season, but his quick return becomes far less pressing with the acquisition of Lee.

The 6-foot-5 Lee, just 27-years-old, has played four seasons in the NBA on three teams in the Magic, Nets, and Rockets. Lee played in 58 games (26 starts) last year for Houston, averaging 30.3 minutes, 11.4 points, 2.7 rebounds, 1.5 assists, and 1.2 steals.

Lee is the second big-name free agent guard that Boston has brought in this offseason, agreeing on a three-year deal with Jason Terry earlier.
