Report: Tourists in Italy spend less time, money

Foreign visitors spent less time and money in Italy last year as the economic crisis hit tourism in the country with the most World Heritage cultural sites, a report by the Bank of Italy showed.

The average length of foreigners’ visits fell in the 10 months through October to 4.5 days from 4.8 in the same period in 2008, the Rome-based central bank said in a report. Average expenditures per trip dropped to $595 or 7.9 percent.

Italy is the fifth most-visited country globally, according to the United Nation’s World Tourism Organization.
