Reports: Red Sox land Joel “The Hammer” Hanrahan

With the Red Sox bringing in a legitimate closer for 2013, it appears they intend on seriously competing for at least an American League playoff spot this upcoming season.

Boston has agreed to a deal with Pittsburgh in which the Sox will land All-Star closer Joel Hanrahan, multiple outlets reported Saturday.

The Sox will reportedly send outfielder/first baseman Jerry Sands and right-handed hurler Stolmy Pimentel to the Pirates along with two players yet to be named.

Hanrahan posted 36 saves last season with the Pirates and 40 the year prior. The righty was a National League All-Star and owned a below .300 ERA in both seasons. The 31-year-old spent his first two MLB seasons with the Nationals.

Hanrahan has been dubbed “The Hammer” in recent years.
